What would you do?
« on: March 11, 2008, 03:40:30 PM »

My boss talks to me today and says he want to make some changes. Since there is a big difference in the performance between sides of the week he would like to have some continuity. His idea is instead of two working foreman he want to go down to one. That one would work M-F and that person would be in charge of all 4 shifts. This person would be less of a wrench turner and more of a manager/coordinator. This person would also have to learn more of the overall workings of the factory in order to foresee when work for certain machines is coming and be able to react to the changes in order to increase productivity.

So that one person would be me. I go from managing 6 people to 14, only worrying about 1/2 the week to 24/7. I would have less manual labor to do but way more responsibility.

I am not sure this will happen as my boss still has to present it to his boss. Also I don't think he is ready to commit to something like this yet. But the fact that he is talking about it and letting me know makes me think it could happen. The other thing is I'm not sure I would have a choice. I am honored he has the confidence in me to do this but a part of me is a little scared too.

I guess I am not asking what would you do in this situation. Or maybe I am. If you had the choice would you go for it?

The problem with rejecting an offered position is you perhaps damage your chances to be offered one again.

Always good to be recognised for one's skills.

Given the opportunity to be less of a wrench jockey I'd go for it.

More stress? probably no more then now, in fact I might be able to concentrate on the part of the job I need to do and less on the mundane stuff.

More money?  Don't Know I doubt it at first as that's now how the company works but an NPR would not be out of the question.

UB and 2i I have to agree with both of you.

IMO, I agree that it would be a good career move to accept the offer.

Having turned down a couple of the opportunities you are presenting (and regretting it now) I say take what is offered.  (But only when, and if it is offered formally)
