Sounds like Smoltz hung him a curve ball.

It wasn't fastballs that ended my baseball career.  It was the offspeed stuff, especially curve balls.

As the kids say, werd.

First time a coach threw a curve ball (not some kid's 1-2" breaker) I was two feet outside the batters box when the catcher caught it. Coach smiled, asked me where I was going, and I realized my baseball career had suddenly run into a significant obstacle.

On the really fast pitchers (guys in the low 90s) I actually only had a chance on their curve or slider.  Sadly as I focused more on pitching my hitting struggled like all pitchers.

Our HS pitching coach however was a lefty that pitched some for the Dodgers.  His claim to fame was a HR he gave up to Darryl Strawberry.  His curve was so nasty it was perfect 12/6 rotation and basically unhittable.

*ahh, memories *

LOL,  i could throw a big (albeit very slow)  breaker, so I knew what to expect when our coach finally started giving them to us.  the 1st one was a screaming line drive right over his head.

but yeh, when i would get called to throw bp (wasn't that good of a pitcher) at times i would mix that in and routinely people would bail out the 1st few times.  it always drew a smile.

Think I got it.  So a 3/9 would be a side arm wrist throw??

no, he just means the rotation on the ball.

12/6 is a curveball spinning top over bottom.  it will behave like it's rolling off a table.

a more typical  pitch is more like a 2/8   dropping some (not as much) while also moving a lot to the side.

Thanks.  I had no idea what it meant.

As long as we're on the subject.  What is the difference between a curveball and a slider?  Anonymous
