Hair exposed from the helmets have always seemed like a safety issue to me.  Maybe it's just something I think about a bit more because I like having my hair long.  If you fall on it, it can pull your neck into some pretty bad positions.  It can get twisted, pulled, stomped on, and even wrapped around stuff.  And that's just to name a few things.  Needless to say, I've always tried to pull it back when participating in sports and other activities.
