Several months ago, the built-in wireless adapter in my POS HP notebook went out on me. Apparently, this is a common problem with HP notebooks. I didn't want to bother sending it in for service, so I decided to use a spare D-Link USB wireless adapter that I had. This damn thing gave me all kinds of grief from the get-go. Several times a day, the adapter would just die on me. It usually happened during bandwidth-intensive activities: downloading pirated MP3s, watching Internet pröñ, reading Aske's PBP threads, etc. Sometimes just yanking it out and putting it back into the USB port would resurrect it. I could tell how taxing the network traffic was on this adapter when this happened--it was always hot to the touch. Other times, unplugging/replugging didn't work, and it required a reboot. Total PITA, and I had to suffer through this for months.
Well, today I was downloading some files, moving files to the server, and running a software update simultaneously, when all of sudden I got a BSOD--probably the first one ever since I got this notebook. I'm thinking "Great. More wireless issues." I rebooted the computer and hoped this meant the death of my D-Link adapter so I would have an excuse for getting a new one. As Windows was starting up, I noticed a pop-up in tasktray. It said a new device was installed. It was the internal wireless adapter! It started working again. Unbelievable.
I don't know how long this is going to last before the internal adapter dies on me again (I have no doubt it will), but I'm going to enjoy a few hours/days of uninterrupted Internet connectivity.

You must have some really incredible computer karma going for you. I haven't seen one since I got my Mac (and only 2 or 3 system freezes).
edit:Meant 'haven't'. Macs don't go to blue screen, just interminable pinwheel.

For a while, we were seeing the BSOD quite regularly. 'Course, that's 'cause we were using it as a screensaver...  |

I'm packing an extra USB wireless adapter sometimes these days. One of the rooms in our house gets spotty wifi, so when I'm in there, I connect my laptop to a wifi USB adapter attached to a honking large external antenna.

Do tell (here or in a new thread). I have to turn my desktop upstairs so that the back of it points at the door -- reception goes from "low" to "very good" just from that. And if I sit in the path, signal strength drops. |
