Factors? Yes.

You can also argue the Sirius/XM effect, our people didn't want to admit it at the time, and prolly still won't.

Also the explosion of talk radio, we kept trying to mass market some kind of niche show that never really panned out, failed shows included a Marie Osmond attempt, a sci fi/conspiracy attempt much like Art Bell, and now I understand they're trying a rock themed show with Greg Kihn Greg *goshdarn* Kihn are you kidding me? he hasn't been relevant in 20 years, this is the lack of vision I'm talking about. On a side note we had one of THE most successful talk shows on radio, freakin' DELILAH, when her contract came up we didn't/couldn't match the offer (rumored to be 10 million per year x 5 years), her leaving us can also be linked to "The Companies" demise.

I'm not going to touch the dilution of artistic vision and talent, music over the last fifteen years has become so fragmented regarding genres that it seems we literally had fifty different ways to go. The vision we lacked was our own.

I own somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 CDs. I think it's safe to say that 1495 or so were purchased prior to 2002. The wife wants the new REM album, but she requires something a bit more tactile than downloading it, so I'll go pick that up sometime this week.

I used to really feel like it was important to have a case, have the artwork, have the liner notes, etc. Somewhere along the way all those things became non-issues in my music purchasing habits.
