I had a Thinkpad 560 (I think) from fall '97 to maybe 2002, when Windows corrupted and it wouldn't boot.  Still have it in a box here.

Linux, huh?  Hmmm ...

Seriously, part of the problem in my trying anything with this old laptop is that it has no internal 3.5 FDD or CD-ROM drives.  CD-ROM drive works via PC card ... which is inoperative until Windows is up and running.  (You see where this is heading?)

Any boot-up has to launch from floppy disks.  I'm pretty sure it WILL look first to the A: drive when it boots, though.

Pull out the HDD. Get one of these. Attach it to your PC. Reformat the drive. Install Ubuntu, Linux, BSD, or whatever you want onto it as a bootable volume. Put it back into the notebook.

OK, to totally jack the Spank ...

I also have a Dell Dimension laptop sitting in the office closet.  Needs a new battery (or can just stay in its damn docking station!).  Maybe that's the one to fiddle with ... ?

He doesn't have to buy it from that particular place. I'm just suggesting the methodology.
