So, does this end up being a fluke or a career-rejuvenating tourney for Duval?

Good question.  Should restore enough confidence to get back to where he was.  Although I read that he said his biggest thing was after winning the major, he convinced himself that there was nothing else after that.

I wonder though if the fact that he didn't win it will play a part.

I'd say somewhere in between. It would be cool to see him become a factor again though. I always thought he could have been the consistent rival to Tiger that some have wished for had he not lost his passion for the game.

Lost his passion for the game? Are you serious? Apparently you haven't been following along very closely.  Grin

 Don't Know

If not "passion", insert word of your choice. Injuries, private demons, confidence....bottom line is he fell off the map after he won the Open. I remember him saying that after he won the Open he had a feeling like "is this really all there is?"

At any rate, I always liked him and loved watching him play. I hope he can continue at this level.

This is all from my memory so the details may be out of sync. Yes he went into a couple of year funk where he was battling depression and anxiety and wasn't sure what he wanted to do with his life or more so who he wanted in control of it. The life David Duval wanted didn't seem to mesh with the tour lifestyle and commitments.
Then when he decided that golf was what he wanted to do, which was years ago, he had lost his swing. There also was the bout with vertigo that almost did him in completely. he also had a back injury that had him side lined for a whole season.
He went through a 5 year stretch where he couldn't hit the ball straight inside a sewer pipe. He tried everything, different instructors shrinks the whole enchilada. for the past 4-5 years he has been about as passionate about the game of golf as anyone and got absolutely nothing out of it till now. Every time he thought he was close to having it back it would disappear as fast as it came.

After watching him this week i will have to say he looked pretty comfortable in his own skin for the first time in a long time and his swing looks very solid. Up until this week, he would go through a bad stretch of holes and then press the issue and go straight into the tank.

It was good to see him play well. Smiley

Uh............ you're both right.  Everything you said about David is true.... and it lead to a loss of passion for the game.  He is much more comfortable now, his passion is back, and I love seeing him hitting the ball well - always loved his swing.

I was cheering for him, and Lefty, and Barnes to be honest.  Was a good day to play a little hookie and watch golf  Cheesy

Bob Rotella called it Wednesday night.  Asked for favorites he gave Tiger of course and then mentioned that he thought Duval would do very well, that the players themselves were saying his swing is back.  He shot 66-69 in qualifying to get one of 17 spots available from 120 players.  The four days before qualifying he was busy playing in the Memorial.  Didn't finish well but made the cut.

Doesn't seem like a one off to me.  He may never win another major but I think he's back.

If I remember correctly his wife is smokin' hot - which is important.

IIRC a lot of his "fail" seemed to be around when he tried to get stronger ?  I wonder how much he really screwed up his body ...  that doesn't excuse the problems between the ears ...
