Apparently, it's due to a spelling error.

A later typo in anthropological records takes us to today's spelling of "geoduck," even though the original pronunciation has sort of been maintained.)

I figure this error's not nearly as egregious as naming indigenous North American "Indians".  Grin

Don't forget about the UC Santa Barbara Banana Slugs! ( I think that's the name), and we watched Sunday Morning this past week, and there is a community college  whose mascot is the Artichoke (it has heart).

Totally not to be an ass, but it's UC Santa Cruz that's the Banana Slugs, not Santa Barbara. UC Santa Barbara is probably the Saline Implants or something
