sounds like a judgment being passed to me. priorities? as in what context? Devil

Yes, you're right, its absolute judgment being passed.

In this context....  Everyone bitching about gas prices, home values, the cost of food, unemployment, ..... the economy is *feces* and will never recover  Roll Eyes .    But we have the cash for a video game.

Yes, its judgment.  Just as your response has been judgment upon Fuzzy.  Life isn't fair - never has been.  Seems the 'everything sucks' crowd is unwilling to listen to anything but their own gospels.

Economic priorities
Just a little different view of the doom and gloom. Seems a lot of people have enough money to buy a video game.
what that says to me is that people are spending money on video games that they should be spending on other things in fuzz's opinion. another holier than thou attitude. i'm sorry if thats not how you meant it. but thats how it reads.

my point is if 5mil people have 60.00 to blow on a game it means nothing. my son and virtually everyone of his friends bought it as soon as it came out or before. the majority of them have jobs and paid for it themselves.  it doesn't mean the country isn't going down the *feces*ter. to say that it does is something i would expect from bushco. Wink

That's bull*feces*. You did read it wrong. My comment was that $500M dollars were spent on a stupid *goshdarn* video game. And I don't care how anyone wants to slice it up and rationalize it away.

You can read into whatever you want. I made no judgement on how anyone, including your sons and friends, choose to spend their money. You spun it that way.  Wink Wink

LOL   Grin

Put me in Fuzzy's camp.  At least I think this is where he was going, or it's how I read the thread:

I can completely see this exchange taking place, and I think it speaks to what this product* has become, and how it has become such an ingrained part of Americana.  In this scenario, economic priorities are out of whack, but my point, and I believe M. LeFezz's point what that it's not even recognized by those people involved.

Ok, we have to pay the Car payment, and the Chase Visa.  That leaves us 100 bucks 'til payday.

Except GTA 4 comes out on Tuesday.

Oh.  Ok, then we'll skip Chase for now, and we'll have 65 bucks 'til payday.

Cool.

Bird, I agree, there are tons out there like your son, and that's how it's supposed to work, but I also believe there are tons more who don't even consider this game what it is.

My take is, you couldn't substitute R/C car in the above exchange nearly as often.

That may be guys but people still buy stuff. They still buy games, movies, books (yes people still buy those), music, go to movies, etc... It's entertainment. People may not be doing as much of it these days but they still do it. Look, Ironman took in what like $100M? So more people went to see Ironman then bought GTA.

While I feel the economy is hurting, people are still going to buy what they want to get. If they have to be creative in how they do it then they will. If they get a bonus or tax return check or rob a bank, whatever they will get what they want.

Somehow in my little household we are doing the same. Now we are not going out and buying video games but we still manage to get some things that we want. We just don't get all of them.

man, i am amazed how people are are willing to pass judgment on people they don't know based on a purchase they know nothing about. well, more disappointed than amazed.

case in point,

Quote
Not like I'm not feeling any pinch ... but I don't know, I have a hard time mustering up major sympathy for folks like:

In Daleville, Ala., Ellona Bateman-Lee has turned to eBay and flea markets to empty her three-bedroom mobile home of DVDs, VCRs, stereos and televisions.

Among her most painful sales: her grandmother's teakettle.

so apparently, this woman never should have bought a tv, dvd, stereo, because now she can't pay her bills?
for all this poster knows, this woman was working at a 15.00 an hour manufacturing job for the past 10 years that is gone forever to china and now has to work at the local mini-mart for 7.50 an hour for the rest of her days.

pretty elitist attitude.......

I really don't think anyone is passing judgment. It was an observation that one can take a certain point of view on. But then again I can see where that can be taken as a judgment.

I don't think anyone is saying people that bought this game in this economic downturn are idiots with their money.

Even in the worst of times people want to splurge, either for themselves or their family. There is no crime in that and there certainly is nothing wrong with it. Some might say people should be stingy with their money but even financial experts say every once in a while you should splurge.

"Having a hard time mustering up major sympathy" is "passing judgment"?

I don't begrudge anyone his purchase.  MY point, generally speaking, is that someone who has decided it's fiscally OK to buy a pretentious name-brand item instead of the much cheaper and eminently serviceable mundane-brand item -- and makes such purchasing choices repeatedly -- has little room to complain about the pinch.  To be perfectly honest, I'd perhaps say the same about a certain Golfho who purchases top-end AV equipment and upscale food/cooking items, yet gripes about his financial lot in life.  I'm not saying he isn't feeling the economy right now, but I'd say that anyone who's spending fits the mold of "I just upgraded from a 42" plasma to a 60" plasma/LCD/whatever" or "we have more TVs than humans in our house" lacks the moral high ground.
