Any gardeners here?
« on: June 01, 2008, 05:20:48 PM »

The last two weeks I've planted my* garden with my daughters help. We do the standard - peas, beans, tomatos, onions, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, etc. Plus my oldest grows gourds and pumpkins to sell in the fall. She has made a couple hundred a year for the past 5 years so I'm more than willing to help out.

So...anybody else do the gardening thing? If so, what do you grow?

*Susan is in another league. Big time into flower gardens - trust me, she'd make most arboretums jealous. I've told her more than once that she missed her calling.

That's about how our yard is now.  Well, maybe not quite to that extent.  We used to grow tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, carrots, watermelon, pumpkins, mint, chives, a few miscellaneous things, rhubarb, and raspberries.  But the trees and bushes around here now shade our front and back yards almost completely, so there really isn't a spot for a garden anymore.  The problem being that many of those trees and bushes aren't even ours, so we can't trim them back.  Anyway, now the only thing we have is mint, chives, maybe a few tomato plants, and the raspberry and rhubarb patches.  Oh, and an apple tree.

However, there is a plus side.  The designated area for our "garden plot" is now our putting green. Cheesy

Conversely, flowers and bushes still do well.  So we are improving our landscaping a bit.

Word. Then again, grass takes entirely too much water in this arid climate for me to feel good about growing it so less than "can't grow it" it's more that I've just let it die.

The older son bought a 48" tiller for his tractor this year.  I now have (and these are all 40' rows) 4 rows of sunflowers, 10 rows of sweet corn, 4 rows of popcorn, 8 rows of potatoes and 6 rows of bush beans.  Squashes and cucumbers will be planted this week.  This is in addition to beds of tomatoes, broccoli, and peppers at both my house and his.

I'll let you all know when we set up the roadside stand. Grin
