Worse Than Vegemite?
« on: July 11, 2008, 07:13:53 PM »

My wife's grandfather was a farm kid during the Great Depression.  She interviewed him over a long weekend a couple years back and wrote a short story based on one of his boyhood experiences: making blood pudding.  We were just talking about him, and on a whim I read this on Wikipedia:

Quote
Black pudding or (less often) blood pudding is a British English term for sausage made by cooking blood with a filler until it is thick enough to congeal when cooled. It is also called blood sausage ( first attested in 1868, perhaps influenced by German Blutwurst).

The Americas
Among English-speaking North Americans, the consumption of black pudding and similar dishes is largely confined to certain ethnic groups with strong Old World traditions as well as French Canadians and recent immigrants from Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, and so forth. Blood sausages are very difficult to find in American supermarkets.

And no, I was not searching for "black sausage".
