Boy have we got a new technical revelation that you can spring on all of the golfers who think the sun rises and sets in the OEM's south side!!

As you all know, I have been adamant in my opposition to the OEM's pursuit of a men's standard driver length of 45" or 45.5", depending on the company. The most obvious reasons have been because of the old clubmaking adage which says, "the longer the length, the more difficult to hit solid and on center." And as you all know, if you miss the so called "sweet spot" of the driver, you lose ball speed and carry distance. There is also the reason that identifies the fact that a 45" driver will always have a higher full club MOI than a 43.5" or even 44" driver, because in the MOI formula, length is a squared quotient while mass is not. THus when you have avg ability golfers trying to swing 45-45.5" drivers with their higher MOI, that higher MOI of the longer driver puts a higher load back on the golfer. This results in many bad things for many golfers - slower swing speed, more over the top swing path, more chance for an early release.

As you know, the week between Christmas and New Year's is pretty quiet in the business of golf equipment. Taking advantage of the lull, I had asked Matt to start doing more MOI tests on our heads and other related MOI technical things I wanted to know more about.

One of the things I wanted to know was a relationship between headweight and the driver head's MOI about the vertical axis of head rotation through the CG of the head. BTW, this is the MOI that the USGA recently put a limit of 5900 g-cm2 on - and is the MOI that the OEMs are trying to push in the introduction of their square drivers.

Matt took one of our 915-460cc-11* driver heads and measured the MOI for the head, right out of its baggie at its headweight of 200grams. MOI for this head was 4533 g-cm2. Not bad considering this head was designed in the summer of 2003 and has no special design features intended to move more mass to the back or outer areas of the heads as do succeeding models like the 949MC or the new 525GRT!!

Matt then put 11 grams of lead tape on the very back of the head, thus moving the headweight from 200g to 211g. The MOI increased to 4917 g-cm2! He then split the lead tape into two equal halves of 5.5g each and put one on the outer toe and one on the outer heel side of the head. The MOI was measured at 4957 g-cm2. The 40 g-cm2 increase came because the positions of the lead tape on the outer heel and toe areas of the head were farther from the axis of rotation through the CG than the very rear of this head - hence a little longer "moment arm" which showed up in a slight 40 g-cm2 increase of the MOI.

But then came the real revelation in all of this that you clubmakers can chuckle about and tell your golfers.

When an OEM builds a driver at their std length of 45-45.5", to achieve their D1 swingweight with their shaft and grip of choice, their driver headweight has to be in the area of 195-198g.

When you make a driver for your golfers at a more controllable length of 43.5-44", you have to add weight to the head to achieve whatever swingweight or MOI that will be best for the golfer. In many cases, I imagine that you are ending up with a final driver headweight of about 210g or a little more. Get where we're going with this??

Yessir - shorter length drivers will offer the golfer a driver head with a higher MOI than what the OEMs can offer!!!

And if you start out with a head like our 949MC, which has a normal as produced MOI of almost 5000 g-cm2 because of the milled crown and tungsten back weight, by making that driver 44" in length at a normal swingweight or MOI, you will deliver a head with an MOI in the area of 5400 g-cm2, which is higher than the highest of the new square drivers being offered in 2007.

Now here's another funny one from this that could end up stinging our friends in Far Hills, NJ. When the day comes that we or any other company designs a head with an initial, as designed and produced MOI of 5400-5500 at its normal 200-202g headweight, because the USGA's MOI limit is 5900, it will be possible for that head to be OVER THE LIMIT if it is built to a length of say, 43.5"!!!!

Wonder if the USGA thought about that?

And that's a little tidbit to end 2006 on!!

PS - oh and by the way, when we took the 200g model 915-460 driver head and put a 9 gram weight into the hosel weight bore, the MOI went from 4533 to 4800 g-cm2. So even using the weight bore in any of our heads so you can leave the lead tape off the outside of the head is going to increase the MOI by a decent amount!!!
