Insert thumb in mouth, assume fetal position {or How Fuzzy almost Freaked}
« on: July 30, 2008, 07:08:52 AM »

Yesterday just before noon I was in the lobby of a company signing out of their visitor's book at the reception desk.

In Garden Grove, CA. 20 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake.

Seriously, I have NEVER experienced anything remotely like what happened yesterday. 30 minutes later my hands were still shaking. If that was a 5.4 I want to be no where near there when the "big one" hits.

That is all.

 Shocked Yikes!!TM  Glad you're ok.

Your hands would have stopped shaking a lot sooner than 30 minutes if you had put a drink in one of them.

I think it was when a piece of one of the light fixtures in the lobby fell to the floor and the gentlemen I was with bolted out to the parking lot that my HTFU was *feces*ting itself.  Wink

I was signing the book and initially it felt like a big ass truck was rumbling by. Then it didn't stop and there was a huge jolt and the receptionist said, "oh no, here we go".

There was no other time in my life that I probably looked more like a deer in headlights. When the guy I was with made a dash to the parking lot I just followed.

To Aske's question I think I said "holy *feces*" when I got outside.

The company I used to work for is now in Fontana ~15 miles from the EC. They were holding a video conference with the mother-ship in PA when the roller came in. Two of the participants calmly left to make sure everything was okay in the manufacturing area, then returned for the meeting. They said that the PA participants were more bothered by the shaking of the camera than the participants in CA were by the actual event. For most who have experienced a few moderate quakes, the anxiety is still there, but it's not quite as big a deal as the first time. However, a Big-One is a whole 'nuther level of *feces* your pants.

Mrs. GP and I presented an offer on a house in Garden Grove a whole bunch of years ago. The owners made a counter offer right after we saw a bumper sticker that read, "Will the Last American Leaving Garden Grove Please Bring The Flag." We re-evaluated and declined.

I don't worry about the "Big One". I guess it would kinda suck to be on a BART train travelling through the Trans-Bay Tunnel below the floor of SF Bay when it happens though. Or be on the currently inadequate Bay Bridge.  Or be stuck in rush hour traffic under an overpass that needs retrofitting. Other than that it's no big deal.

Or you could be reaching the apogee of coital bliss while on BART or in the Tunnel, or stuck in traffic. Big one bites the Big one.

I've never been in an earthquake, so I have no point of reference other than that movie that Charlton Heston was in.... I think it was called Earthquake
