A new found respect
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:26:33 PM »

On the way home we decided to stop at the USS Alabama at Mobile. The boys had a good time and it was fun to see Darla climb up and down the ladders on the big ship. The highlight of the day was not the battleship but our little tour of the USS Drum. A WW II sub. While on it one of the volunteers over heard me talking to the boys about the sub and he asked me if I served. Told him I was on the USS Providence and we started talking for a good 45r minutes. He unlocked some of the hatches for me and I got to go where no tourist got to go. I must say I have a much greater respect for the men that served on those subs back in that time. To survive is one thing, to keep your sanity is another. It really was awesome to see what those men had to endure and where they had to work. Some of those spaces were so small that only one person could fit.

What I did was a far cry from what those men did. I tried to put myself back in time and imagine what it would have been like. I don't think I did them justice in my mind.

I think Darla got some pictures and we will post them when we get home.

Woman, open the door, don't let it sting. I wanna breathe that fire again.

Oops. Wrong Alabama. I guess you can't have kids traipsing around in a boomer.
