Watching WSOP. Helmuth just went ballistic, calling this dude all sorts of names and trashing him. (personally, I don't care what his beef was, I would have stood up and said "Try calling me an idiot one more time and see if I don't come across this table and light you up you pompous *fudge*." But that's just me.
So, no name dude has 10, Q. Helmuth has pocket 8's. I wasn't paying that close attention to the beginning, but I believe it was the normal bet check stuff.
Flop: 9 6 J. Bet, bet, call.
Turn: 8. Helmuth check. No name dude: Call bet. Helmuth call. River: Irrelevant.
Helmuth gets up and starts ranting about a call raise with (at this point, what he thinks/assumes is a 10, Q) How he has a "set", etc.
Sure enough, No name dude smokes him with the straight.
So my question is why was he so pissed? Seems to me the guy played it the way you should. Got the card he needed on the turn, but so did Helmuth.......
Seriously being a real loud vocal ass. Like I said, I would have knocked the *feces* out of him.
What am I missing? Bad Poker etiquette?

I wasn't watching but have seen enough of Phil to know he's an *bunghole* of the highest level at the table. He thinks no one should ever call his bets - that everyone should just lay down their cards because he made a raise. Phil wants to play poker with the hole cards - he doesn't like flops, turns, or rivers - he wants to play with two cards. Thats not poker and the *bunghole* knows it. He just can't stand losing, ignores that gambling and luck are part of the game, and that its never his fault if he doesn't win.
Its amazing the crap he gets away with during his rants. He should be tossed out but isn't because of who he is. He gets all that special treatment and still thinks he deserves more. Yes - a pompous *fudge* he is.

I'm trying to remember the hand, I thought PH made a pretty sizable bet (something like $60,000) with pocket 8's versus a straight draw on the flop. Middle pairs are so hard to play which is why you probably over bet them to scare away flush and straight draws, pot odds dictate the dude probably should have folded, and hitting the straight on the turn or river will always send PH reeling.
Hellmuth is still worth the price of admission, and arguably the best hold 'em player ever, whiney...yup, an *bunghole*...no doubt, but the dude has like 10 or 11 championship bracelets (I think all in hold 'em), and he's still the youngest world champion of all time.

Phil is indeed a great player (better than I at least)... that said, his game is not* suited for big time modern tournament play anymore with the new generation of internet amateurs etc getting in. He's too tentative to get it all in and prevent getting these "horrible beats" because he doesn't seem to really trust his reads anymore and make the right bet sizing. |

Have to agree, his argument is that this "new generation" will call anything (and it's obvious they do). Which is contrary to the way he learned the game. |
