That's what he gets for inciting hatred. He realized that riling up the rednecks through race-baiting won't get him elected, so now he's trying to calm them down to appeal to the undecideds. It's probably too late though. I expect public shouting of n-bombs from the crowd during his campaign stops within a week.

my basic thesis is, the base will capture him and do the whole "Deliverance" nasty on him, for letting them down

It was SUCH a stupid strategy.  A huge mistake.  It not only allowed Obama a chance to take the high road, McCain basically built the road for him.
