What is ironic to me is that commercial software has ALWAYS been licensed, not sold. Always. If it were a sale instead of a license, then buyers could duplicate the product, sell it commercially, reuse it for any purpose, etc., etc.

For that matter, a lot of open source software is licensed too under less commercial terms.

But personal consumers never understood this. They accept the license agreement upon installation without reading or understanding it.

Bull*feces* analogy is bull*feces*. An AutoCAD program and Yanni's Greatest Hits aren't remotely the same thing.

so lose your install cd and ask them to send you another.

i'm sure your "license receipt proof" will result in this just costing you $1 postage..

my point related more towards video game trade/sales actually .

 .

Or I  could face the consequences of my own stupidity and buy the software like I'm supposed to. If I lose my copy of Catcher In The Rye, I don't expect  JD Salingers estate to provide me with new copy free of charge, and I sure as hell wouldn't expect a rewritten version he was getting ready to send to the publisher at the time of his death to boot.

The latest version of 'Bloodbath IV' has alot more in common with Yanni's Greatest Hits than an AutoCAD program.

I wouldn't worry too much.

the software/music/etc companies want it both ways

you buy it, it's a license.
after you buy it, if you scratch it/lose it, its physical media and you have to rebuy to replace it
after you buy it, if you want ot duump it, you're screwed.

I reedited my post to be a little more clear. And I'm well aware that you think anything ever posted on the InNerGoogles or produced in a digital medium should be free to whoever is smart enough to figure out a way to steal it.

I have no idea why you think that.  I've never posted anything that I can recall that reflects that I support piracy.  You do know that I for example have an extensive *real* cd/lp collection, right ? I probably also have the largest dvd/bluray collection here.

I do support a vast improvement of consumer rights vs korprit rights as they stand right now.
