Step 1: Exploit loophole in law to threaten dominant player in the market
Step 2: Continue to exploit loophole through years of legislative and court battles
Step 3: PROFIT when dominant player just buys you out to avoid the hassle.

I'm sure that somehow hollywood/netflix will make it a legal thing, but I don't see what's illegal/loophole about it.

The loophole is that Zediva doesn't have to pay for the rights for digital streaming because they are using a CD as the source instead of a digital file.

DVD is just a holder medium of a digital file. It's legal to rent them out physically if you buy them (Netflix, Blockbuster, etc....) they're just sending the contents to the customer the fastest way possible. As I read it, they aren't allowing more than 1 viewer (customer, obviously) per disc while in use--- some titles can even be "unavailable" if rented out. Slingbox is legal. This seems to essentially combine the 2 concepts.

I was just reading that their site crashed and most of the titles were unavailable when it came back up yesterday.
It seems like a flawed concept from the start: When somebody clicks on the 'Watch' button, somebody at Zediva has to run down the hall, grab the CD and put it in a player?
Sounds pretty high tech to me!

I also read it crashed, and I wondered from posting the otherday if they can handle demand-- obviously they will never offer BluRay as the bitrate is ~5-10x higher than DVD--- 99.99% of people in USA don't have internet capable of that. As for the "person clicking play" I'm sure its fully automated, network controlled.

Here's how much I know: Apparently, there are DVD players that hold 500 discs?
It still seems like they would only play one at a time. It just seems really unwieldy and overly complex?

I'm usually for "sticking it to the man", but this seems like a misguided use of technology. They're really not providing a better user experience. Their technology is to circumvent archaic IP laws. All the power to them though.
