The last GREAT car race in 'Merka started last night.
« on: January 12, 2011, 06:16:25 PM »

Every January, the parking lot at the Tulsa Expo center fills up with haulers from all over America.

There is only one rule: You have to have a car that somebody would MAYBE recognize as a 'Midget'.

The car count usually exceeds 200.

Drivers from all over the world show up, from every discipline. NHRA, NASCAR, Brazilian Go Karters, you name it. Tony Stewart started using the name 'Smoke Johnson at this event when his Gibbs contract forbad him from racing open wheel.

They race on an indoor track that's about half the size of the one at your high school.

They race for 5 days. Hilarity ensues.

It's on my bucket list. Tix for the next one will go on sale pretty much immediately after, and be sold out by March.

Not that you can tell from most of the highlight reels, but there is some absolutely incredible racing that goes along with the car gymnastics.

Oh, and the party in the midway! Legendary, and anybody who has ever been anybody in American motorsport shows up at some point. Usually with a beer or 3.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I enjoyed watching that movie as a kid.
