I don't know if this makes it more or less creepy, but often the lurkers are just members that haven't logged in yet. I do this sometimes when I just want to glance at the site and don't bother logging in, and I'm guessing others do, too. Also, sometimes the lurkers are really spiders that hasn't been identified yet. There are so many crawlers/bots out there, and the forum is only aware of 20 or so. If it's a new spider that doesn't identify itself as a spider or has a name that hasn't been added to the spider list, it will appear as a lurker. I've been creeped out before when it's only me and a lurker on the forum, and I see that they're viewing my profile.  But then again, it also amuses me when I look at the list of "Who's Online", and see that there's someone else "Viewing Who's Online" at the same time.  |
