One other reason. At the time MN was using trimesters and school started mid to late September and didn't get out until mid June.
"Normal" colleges on semesters started around labor day and got out mid May. Getting a jump on the summer jobs was nice. MN finally rectified their silly schedule a few years ago.

Some of them had sort of a "socially underdeveloped" vibe from never getting out of the echo chamber of where we grew up nor getting to open their minds to a larger world out there.
