i could see it on certain situations... but all our personnel is built around pure zoning or 3-4 man schemes

The main thing is having a coach not stuck in his ways and actually being willing to change when something isn't working well (at least that's my perspective).

If you believe Torps hipe -- then the Steelers are now the #1 defense.

I never said it was because of Tomlin. Although he sure didn't hurt.

Visited some Vikes fan forums and the Minny fans are pretty much unanimously disappointed and upset to be losing Tomlin. I don't know much about him other than he's young, seems extremely bright, energetic, and charasmatic.
If you're a Steelers fan and don't feel good about the hire, visit purplepride.com or some other Vike forums and see how their fans feel about Tomlin. It might make you more optimistic.

I never said it was because of Tomlin. Although he sure didn't hurt. #1 RUN defense. Let's not forget they tied Cincy for last in pass defense. Tough to earn that distinction when you're not a good team defending a big lead. He built the #1 pass defense in Tampa as secondary coach though. Seems like a good hire to me. A secondary benefit will be new blood running the offensive line as Grimm will surely leave. With the above average talent on that line (old as some of it may be) it should have been much, much better this year. I'm glad they didn't go with Grimm.

As a Steelers fan, it shames me to admit I don't know this, but ...
What was Cowher's experience prior to taking the Pittsburgh head coaching job? How does that compare with Tomlin's?
EDIT:
Cowher: 1985-1986: Cleveland Browns (Special Teams Coordinator) 1987-1988: Cleveland Browns (Secondary) 1989-1991: Kansas City Chiefs (Defensive Coordinator)
Tomlin: 2001-2005: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Secondary coach) 2006: Minnesota Vikings (Defensive coordinator)
His defenses have ranked highly ...

Unlike Tomlin he was a special teams coach, like Tomlin he was a secondary coach and then a defensive coordinator. All under Marty Schottenheimer in Cleveland and KC. No college experience though (I think).

i have no doubt in 3-4 .. maybe 5 years (if he's still here) pgh could have the best defense in the league... as it stands now, if he is deadset on adopting a TRUE 4-3 cover2 scheme, we're SUTCWAP because we have 1 real DT, zero real DE's, too many players trained in the 3-4 base and really, only 1 good safety in coverage. the next 2 years would be painful, beyond description watching the team adapt to the change with woefully inadequte personnel this puts the steelers, who are in desperate need of drafting/FA'ign a good OL or two in the position of also needing to FA/draft entirely new defensive players, simply to adjust to a new scheme. the best option, imho, if he really wants to play cover 2 with the players we have now is to play cover 2 out of a 3-3-5 set with polamalu at essentially a rover (3-3-4-1) (which he basically plays now anyways) with total freedom to hawk over the middle of the field and no dedicated assignements. . this essentially equates to a cover 3 at all times depending on his read, which might work an improvment in our pass defense overall while at the same time putting a big load on the DL to stop the run with 1 less dedicated LB.

I don't get the impression that he's dead set on anything other than being a winner. I've heard it reported that he's already said he's keeping LeBeau as the D coordinator. He's also on record as saying he's not a "scheme" coach, but rather will adapt to his personnel in whatever way gives the best chance to win. Hopefully this is all accurate. If it is, we'll be more than fine. If Grimm leaves, I don't see that as much of a loss. The only other guy I have any concern about is QB coach Mark Whipple, and only then if having him around keeps Ben comfortable.

Not purplepride.org, they are still arguing if we should start Gus Frerotte over Daunte Culpepper. lol
