Free Anti-Virus for Macs?
« on: February 15, 2007, 05:35:45 PM »

My mother and sister are Mac users and need  virus protection software to replace their expiring Norton whatever. I would appreciate some suggestions and free is always good!  Grin

Thanks!

I'm trying out a demo of the Kaspersky product.  I like it quite  bit so far.

But it isn't free after the 30 days expire.

clamXav.

Slow, manual but it works.

(You don't really need an AV program for Mac's as long as you are careful.)

Umm, point out the products for Mac's. Huh?

I didn't see any on their website.

Haven't run AV since Macintosh 9.  Just make sure your firewall is turned on (it is by default) and don't download/click stuff for which you don't know/trust the origin.

I guess if you're running Office products you still might be susceptible to macro exploits.  I don't even open untrusted Office documents so it's not much concern to me.

Even the much ballyhooed Month of Apple Bugs project didn't find dangerous vulnerabilities.  There's always the "download DMG from random website, mount, click on 'Click Me' and enter admin password' sort of thing.  If you get nailed by one of those... well....   Devil

Never say never.  I'm very careful about what I let into our systems and to date on OSX we've had zero down time due to virus/spyware/trojans/etc.  If the situation ever warrants AV we'll install it in a heartbeat.

That's what I meant by being careful.

My older son's photo studio is 100% Mac, both my home computers are Mac's, and we, too, would install AV if a viable threat ever emerged.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't used the Mac os since before the internet came into widespread use, so had no idea of what to expect. I use Avast on my PC and have never had a problem here.

I still want one.  I didn't think they needed AV protections, per se.

I'm stupid as hell too, btw.
