Your first set of clubs
« on: March 01, 2007, 11:58:57 AM »

I'm in a nostalgic mood today....

Do you remember your first set of clubs?

I was thinking about my first set of golf clubs today, and I can't remember who made them.  It was a kids set, and only had a 2-wood, 5-iron, 7-iron, 9-iron, and a putter.  There couldn't have been that many kids sets around way back then.

My first clubs where I can remember the name were Power Bilt Levelumes that belonged to my mom, but she never played, so I used them all the time.

They looked like this:

Wilson K-28s. When you hit them off center they stung like hell. When you hit the sweet spot, they still stung like hell. At least they were damn near impossible to get airborne. Sweet sticks.

First set was some hand-me-down First Flight irons from my pops.

First "new" set I got when I was around 16 were Spalding Executives...ugliest, clunkiest things I ever hit.

My grandmother gave me a set of clubs from Sears.  I don't remember there being any woods, but there might have been.  I think they were actually a ladies set so they would fit a 11-12 year old boy than a men's set might have.

My first set was  a Northwestern 'Herman Kaiser' full set 4 woods 8 irons. Brand new, from Kmart, they cost $50. My first putter was an original Ping, (the one that made the ping sound). This cost about $10. Time was 1969.
I don't remember how the irons felt when hit on the sweetspot, (I don't think I hit the sweetspot that often with them Sad).

Wilson X-31's.

Small forged blades. Probably couldn't hit 'em today if I tried.

Hmm, the first set I used was my grandmother's Patty Bergs, and I used them until 2 years ago.

A set of Kroyden Paul Harneys that I inherited when a friend dropped out of college and moved home.

I used them for about 20 years.  Sad

I can't find a picture anywhere.  They were Wilson Crest, Johnny Miller signature edition.  3-pw, Driver, 3, 5 wood. Persimmon w/ brass sole plate.  Circa '78.

Given by dad, when he gave up the game.  Played 'em 'til '94.

I don't even think that my clubs had a name that I can remember. They were oversized cavity backs and pretty heavy. Full set of Driver, 3w, 5w and 3 to PW.

I miss my 3 iron sometimes, but then I talk sense to myself.

My first ever club was an Integra driver that I still own. The set I mentioned above, I sold it for 20 bucks along with an old and annoying Ogio bag to one of Aske's research group members. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi...

Mine were the 88-89 Hogan Apex's that my Grandfather gave me.  He was an old school ho and gave them to me when he got new irons in the early 90's.  I was about 11 years old.  I also had an original Big Bertha driver.

Not too long after I got the irons my clubs were stolen out of our garage.  My bag had a large bag of tees with my name on them to.  Over the next few years I'd find one of my tees at the course nearby.  That really pissed me off.

Wilson's of some kind.  Can't remember.  All I know is that they were not very forgiving and I gave them away after playing them for 1 year.
