Laptop recommendations
« on: March 15, 2007, 03:24:20 PM »

My laptop was stolen Sunday while I was at the PCS show in Louisville.   Cry  (That's why I haven't been very active this week)

I'm still sorting out the responsibility aspects, but I anticipate getting reimbursed by the hotel, since they were holding it under a valid claim check.  Anyway, someone here must be up on the latest and greatest.  Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Damn, that sucks.

What kind was your old laptop?

I've only had a Sony Vaio and a Dell laptop, and preferred the Dell.

There was a pretty good discussion about buying a laptop here:

Old laptop was a Toshiba Satellite.  A little smaller than most, so it was easy to travel with.  Battery life sucked though, maybe 2-3 hours.  Looks like Dell might be worth checking out.  Had Sony's before, never again.  Thanks.

PC Mag (among others I've seen) gives good reviews to this Dell model:

I have two more kids heading to college in the fall and wanted something not overly expensive. I liked what I read about these and have a couple of them ordered.

Thanks Bob, there are definitely some good deals there.

Dell's are pretty good (I almost can't believe I'm saying that).  But I would add a "but".  Get rid of all the free trials and extra junk that comes on them.

Haven't used a sony.  Have used a toshiba (not too extensively, though), didn't care much for the screen or touchpad.  But those are just my preferences.

The touchpad and keyboard are exactly why I won't buy another, they were awful.

We just picked up an HP nx6310 (my wife is not a power user).  Small, light, tremendous battery life.  We bought from PC Connection and were very happy with the transaction.

Get rid of all the free trials and extra junk that comes on them.
That goes for the HP line, too.

Nice.

I don't know anything about laptops, so I'm no help on the OP.

I'm looking to score our oldest's Apple Macbook, if I can swing buying her a new one.
She says her current one is taxed with her memory and speed requirements, but should be fine here.

My guess is she's happy with the models endurance?
