Prior to teh interwebs as we currently know them I was quite involved in a couple of usenet discussion groups, primarily those about music. Usenet groups with names like alt.music.mighty.mighty.bosstones.discussions.about.their.songs.and.albums.and.other.random.stuff were not uncommon.

I hung out a lot on usenet in college. In the early days of the X-files, I used to dial in with my modem into a local fan BBS and chat about episodes.
The first web board that I spent time on where I posted more than just a few posts was Silicon Investor/techstocks.

rec.auto.sport.nascar on Usenet back in 1992ish(?) using Pine. Text only. Usenet is Use-less-net now I'm afraid. I was on some BBSs' prior to that but I can't remember what they were, local houston chat as I recall. I used AOL 1.something as well. It came with GeoWorks. OK, ok... thats more than you asked for, sorry.  |

Some Smalltalk usenet group. It's been ages. Don't remember the address.
Very good implementation though. If the board sent you five doesNotUnderstand: messages in a week you had to sit in a corner and reflect upon yourself for a while.
