What's Your "Honus Wanger"?
« on: May 25, 2007, 05:25:33 AM »

I don't really collect much stuff, or sports memorabilia.  Basically just a few.

You may not be aware, but I am a pretty big Vikings fan.  In 1998, the had a pretty good run. They were the odds on favorites to go to, and win the SuperBowl, and had 2 players that crushed, and set several records. Made it the the NFC championship game, and lost in OT by a very ironic field goal.  If any one doesn't know the details, I will be happy to chronicle them for you.  I do it weekly in therapy.

In February of 1999, I was working at the UofM, and talking to one of our product rep.s.  I don't know how we got on it, but she asked if I like football.  I said yeppers.  She tells me her husband is from South Africa, and has been lifelong friends with Gary Anderson. They grew up playing soccer together.  She knows him quite well.  She asked if I saw the game.  Roll Eyes  Sad  She said she would have him sign a ball if I would like.  Shocked

If you don't know, or don't care......I'll save you the time.  In '98 Anderson had a perfect kicking season.  No missed field goals, or PATs.  We are in OT with Atlanta (after taking a knee from the brilliant mind of Mr. Crown Their Ass Cussing)  We march down, and he misses his first kick of the year.  They march down, and Morton Anderson makes his.  We lose.   Disgusted

She said he was destroyed, and had a really hard time with it, but when she told him she worked with a big fan that wanted an autograph, and appreciated his efforts, it made his day.

I also have "Homer Hankies"  From the '87, and '91 Twins World Series wins, and a Wheaties box, featuring the MN Twins in '87.  Notable for being the first ever Wheaties box to feature more than 1 athlete.  Worth about a $2.13 at auction.

What do you got?

I have an autographed picture of me with Gene Simmons, sans makeup (Gene too). I assume it's worth about $.50, give or take.

Stan Musial autographed picture that I picked up at a silent auction at a charity golf tourney.

Pete Rose autographed my baseball glove back when he was still playing.  Problem was - it was my only glove and I had to use it.  The autograph really isn't viewable any longer  Cry

Oh wait - a pic of my golf group with Donna Caponi that she signed for me at a corporate outing  Grin Roll Eyes

A John Daly autographed hat.

Bob Feller and Whitey Ford autographed base balls.

But no cool stories like yours.

I did see Bill Russell down at a golf course in Kent one day, but I knew he was notorious for NOT signing so I just got to shake his hand.

Nice story.

As for my "wanger": well, I'm just not a collector.  I'm told it's a personality thing, which is to say ...

Um, I have a golf ball of Bill Koch's that has his name imprinted on it.

Woo-hoo!

spaceage mentioned Gene Simmons, who, to my knowledge, is not an athlete, but if famous musicians are allowed, I can enter into evidence the following:  One pristine copy of the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Freaky Styley and the Uplift Mofo Party Plan" on vinyl, the cover of which is signed by all the original members, including Hillel Slovak (so soon taken from us by a heroin overdose).  So there.

I did see Bill Russell down at a golf course in Kent one day, but I knew he was notorious for NOT signing so I just got to shake his hand.

I worked as his stat/spotter guy a time or two when he was doing NBA broadcasts on ABC (or maybe it was CBS?). They always grabbed someone to help out and since I was working at the arena (Hofheinz Pavillion on the U of Houston campus) I made myself available. He was very nice and after one of the games I asked him for his notes. He leaned over the table and signed them and handed them to me! I have no idea where that sheet is today, stuck in one of my many storage boxes of memorabilia I hope.

But my Honus Wagner? Hmmm.....

I have a couple of things that mean something to me that I wouldn't part with:

An original Phi Slamma Jamma warmup set from the Hakeem/Clyde UH teams.

A letter and picture sent to me from Brooks Robinson about my naming my son for him.

Ticket stub and program from the Jan 1968 game between UH and UCLA in the Astrodome.

The ticket from the Texans win over the Cowboys in their first ever game. It was special in that I took my Dad and I've never seen him so excited about any game. It was a great night to pay him back for all the cool stuff he took me to when I was growing up.
