Unless you were a speech and debate dork in high school, it's probably a good idea to avoid using the term.
Guilty.  Sad

 Grin

I remember in my high school, you could actually "letter" in speech and debate. The only thing is that the letter itself actually said "speech and debate" on it. Some of dorkiest of the speech and debate dorks were brave enough to wear their lettermen's jackets around like the athletes did. If you ask me, that's just begging the wedgie.

With no disrespect intended to Spacey and any other *bunghole* who was on a debate team ...

It seemed like the easiest opponents to defeat in law school moot court competitions were those who'd had debate team experience.  Maybe the way you debaters are trained to present ... ?  They typically acted like they thought they'd win based on touching X number of issues or throwing out Y number of buzzwords.  But when the judge interrupted and either challenged their position or switched to an entirely different topic ... painful to watch.

But again, not you, Spacey.  You're special, just like your mom always told you.

I don't doubt it, even a little bit. And yeah, I "lettered" in debate. It wasn't until I was invited back to judge tournaments that I was able to figure out how retarded the institution was. Painful to watch, indeed. Unfortunately the average high school debate judge was easily persuaded by touching on X number of issues and/or Y number of buzzwords. That's why the average high school debate judge very seldom finds him/herself presiding over an actual courtroom.

Oh, and my mom never told me I was special, unless she was referring to athletic talent.

Weird. On my first glance, I mistook Ralph Macchio for Marisa Tomei.

Vinny Gambini: How many fingers am I holding up now?
Constance Riley: [Squinting, trying to see the fingers] 4.
Vinny Gambini: [Coming back to Mrs. Riley] What do you think now dear?
Constance Riley: Thinkin' of gettin' thicker glasses.

Aargh, that's the second time I've pwned myself with this movie.

I've only seen it once on an airplane as I was falling asleep, but clearly it made an impression on my brain.  I need to watch it again so I realize when I'm making references to it.
