Quote
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Pete Dye, the golf course architect who built his reputation on risk-reward shots at courses like TPC Sawgrass and the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, was selected Tuesday for the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Dye was selected in the Lifetime Achievement Category and will be inducted Nov. 10.

He will be the fourth person in the Hall of Fame whose primary occupation was a golf course architect, joining Donald Ross, Alister Mackenzie and Robert Trent Jones Sr.

I'd like to try Whistling Straits that's for sure.

I can do without playing Sawgrass. It's not that I don't think it's a nice course, it's just that to me it's not a stand out. Maybe I've played it too many times on TW06 and TW07, or maybe I know I will walk away with a score of 130+ and have started on my second dozen of balls by 15.

I'm not knocking the course any but for me to play? I can pass.

While it's not in your nature to be optimistic, I've heard somewhere the national economy is on the verge of total collapse.  I'm positive you'll gain ground!!!

My home course was designed by Pete's son, P.B.  While we have plenty of railroad ties, they rarely come into play.

If we're talkin' relatives...

Matt Dye - grandson.

Certainly among the top 3-4 public courses in Utah.

I'd love to play Whistling as well. Kind of pricey but with the two Whistling courses and the two Blackwolf Run courses you'd be hard pressed to find a better golf destination from what I hear. If not, this is new and closer to Minneapolis:

Supposed to be really nice, fairly "quiet" and a lot less pricey.

As impressive as his resume is the careers he helped spawn. Aside from family members, guys like Tom Doak got their start working for Pete Dye. Even Nicklaus got his feet wet in course design when he worked with Dye on Harbour Town.

Sawgrass, Kiawah, and Bulle Rock are all on my list of courses I expect to play someday. Harbour Town is the only big name Dye course I've played.

In his book Tom Doak praises Dye highly.  I struggled with that a bit.  Doak is the consummate minimalist.  Dye pushes a lot of dirt around.  They seem to have very different design styles.  I think I understand Doak's philosophy and it seems quite different from what I perceive Dye's to be.  However, having not read much on/by Pete Dye and having never played one of his tracks I'm sure I'm missing his vision.
