Endorsement deals going bye-bye?
« on: November 24, 2008, 09:41:49 AM »

I'm guessing heavy sponsor-dependent (Auto racing, Golf, etc.) sports are sweating these days. It's going to be difficult for a lot of these companies to justify spending huge endorsement money with their hands out to Congress.

Quote
DETROIT (AP) General Motors Corp. said Monday it is ending its nine-year endorsement deal with golf superstar Tiger Woods as the automaker continues to cut expenses and hoard cash while trying to survive the worst sales downturn in a quarter-century.

The cash-strapped company said in a statement that it is looking to reduce costs, and that Woods also wants more personal time as he expects his second child.

Woods has endorsed GM products around the world and mainly has been seen in Buick commercials as the company tried to give the nameplate a more youthful image.

``I am very proud of the long standing partnership I've had with GM and have enjoyed being a part of the company's dramatic product evolution,'' Woods said in a statement.

GM's statement said the company and Woods agreed together to end the deal, and the separation was amicable.

You do realize that she's *goshdarn* with us, right? Playing all Sandy Olsson innocent when she's really more like Betty Rizzo with her mind in the gutter just like the rest of us.

^Sometimes a train is just a train.  Devil

Sponsorship is ALREADY a huge issue in NASCAR, and with teams folding/merging/cutting operations left and right, it could be a tough couple of years. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a couple of short field (less than 43) races next season, particularly late in the year at Las Vegas and Phoenix, where Southwest Tour teams can no longer just fire a bullet into an existing chassis and run with the big boys.

On the upside, the COT actually HAS reduced operating costs for teams, at least in terms of actual cars on hand. Before, you really needed 10 or more per driver, now that number's down to 4 or 5, and you can probably get by with 3. NASCAR has instituted a 'Testing Ban', but it's lip service more than anything. Teams are still free to test at a track they don't race on, so teams with money will still test at will.

All that said, I think tough times helps separate the wheat from the chaff.

Certain future hall of famer Brent Kaeding said it best:

'Real racers always find a way to race more with less'.

You are SO cute. You think these people have shame, like the old timey guys who at used to fade out of sight to die broke and alone on skid row or throw themselves out of a window.

I'm going to assume you aren't being condescending. I get the fact that you'll always be able to find the pigs but.....along with GM ending Tiger's deal NASCAR is laying off people and the LPGA is cutting back their schedule. Sponsorship money IS tightening up.

No, wasn't being condescending.

There's a thin line between legit marketing expenses and OTT waste.

7 million for one guy (even Tiger) is a little steep. Prolly cuts WAY into the Lear Jet money.
