Have you ever hit a person with a golfball (or been hit)?
« on: March 19, 2007, 03:07:18 PM »

I've been pretty lucky in this area.

I've never hit anyone, although I've been close a few times.  Luckily those times I've been close, my ball has been rolling and already on the ground by the time it gets near someone.

I've never been hit either, although I've been sitting in a cart twice that's been hit.  One time we were just driving along and a ball came out of nowhere and hit the roof of our cart.  It wasn't our group or the group behind us, but it was an impressive shot to hit us on the fly, though.

I used to be in a regular foursome and on one of the days I wasn't there, one guy hit one of my other playing partners.  Massive hook and caught him in the eye.  He was in the hospital for a while, but has fully recovered by now.

Have you ever been hit or hit anyone with a ball?

Grazed once last year.  Ball was hit with a driver and it went right between my legs and nicked me on the inner thigh.  If I'd been a few inches shorter it would have castrated me.  Of course, any shorter and I'd have to have a parent with me to even get on the course.

I bitched hard at the dude later in the round.  Afterwards he bought me beer.

Also last year, I was with a guy who nailed a dude right in the head with a 3W shot on the fly.  Felled him.  I thought for sure he was dead.  The guy's meth freak son, after spending exactly zero seconds checking to see if his dad was alive, sprinted up the hole and proceeded to challenge all of us to a death match with knives.  Not that I blame him for being upset.  The guy who played the shot handled it well.  He couldn't have felt worse.  I wouldn't have played myself but he was 265 out and in the rough.  He didn't think he could reach.  Apparently he caught a flyer.   Roll Eyes

They left the flagsticks laying on the ground for the rest of the round.  So it evened out.

I had a tricky little chip to the green, which my brother decided to stand right behind before I took my shot, and I ended up skulling it right into his thigh. He danced around a bit, and my ball came to rest about 3 feet from the cup. Luckily he acknowledged that he probably should have been standing somewhere else, but I still think he was pretty pissed about it.

EXCELLENT! but begs the question why you are saving pictures of him.

I hit a lady once on my 2nd shot into the green on a five par  Wink when I was a solid 225 away ( I didn't think I could hit a ball that accurately), needless to say I wait until the green is clear now.

side note:
My buddy was dropped like a sack of taters last year from shot that you would have to see to believe, the guy was teeing off (he is right handed) and he hit my friend who was standing on the green (#3) we were playing which is almost 150 degrees from the tee shot of a right handed player. Does that make sense? You had to see it too believe it, the other 2some we were playing with bought my buddy drinks the rest of the day.

Yes and no.  Kev's hit me three times (that I remember) - only once on purpose - All were practice pitch shots in our backyard, and none of them hurt.

Got pegged in the stomach on the fly when serving as forecaddie at age 14 or so.  Never saw it after it broke the treeline.

Nice welt.

Bad boy Fuzzy.   Poke

Forgot about the time I hit myself and woke up 10 seconds later on my back with 11 guys staring down at me.  That was a real trick alright.  I've recounted this elsewhere but somehow the telling doesn't quite get the story across.  The guys who were there can't get throught it without busting their guts.

I've hit more shots than I care to remember, when I yelled "Look Out!".  Never hit anyone.  I have not been hit.

I have a terrible (embarrassingly) tendency to leave the blade open/shank a less than full wedge.  Anonymous

Two instances--one involving me and one involving a good friend.

My wife is really a saint and is on the board of directors of United Cerebral Palsy of Oklahoma.  We have a daughter with CP, and since her husband plays golf, she was elected to chair their annual golf tournament.  She's done a great job with it, and due to her efforts, my best friend from church, and my brother-in-law both played in it 5 years ago.  My BIL played weekly and loved the game.  During the tournament, my friend putted out on the green, and walked to the next tee box, which was very close to that green.  My BIL was in the group behind my friend, and was about 60 yards off the green.  He pulled a lob wedge, and bladed his shot and pulled it left (he golfs like I do.)  The ball screamed through the air, hitting my friend in the forehead.  He went to the emergency room, and wound up being OK.  My brother-in-law put up his clubs that day and hasn't golfed since.  Several of our courses in the area have striped poles in the middle of the fairway marking the 150 yard point, and I joke with my friend that he should stand out by the pole so that golfers could hit the target.   But he and I am both saddenned that my BIL gave up on the game due to an accident that could happen to most of us.

2nd story.  Last fall, I club ho'ed (again), and went to a local 9 hole pasture course to try out my new driver.  The first hole is a par 4, dogleg right, with water on the right side.  A course worker was working on the left side of the fairway, which would normally be my target area as this weak hitter doesn't have enough stick to carry the water over the dogleg on the right.  The course worker is oblivious to me.  I wait for five minutes, and decide to go ahead and try to carry the dogleg on the right, even though it will result in a wet ball.  So, of course, I pull my drive left, heading straight for the worker.  My first thought is that I hit that ball so well, it will fly over his head.  That's of course is the rational of most golfers who think that they hit their drives 270 when it's more like 230.  I still yell "fore", and think the ball will fly over him, then see his head jerk sideways suddenly as the ball goes by him.  It's a very long walk to him, and he's got blood on his cheek.  The ball hit him on the cheek and I offerred to take him to a doctor, but he said that's what he gets for working on a golf course and not paying attention.  I still feel bad about it to this day.

I've never hit anybody, which is pretty amazing. I can spray balls with the best of them, and my home course is (and always has been) one of the best known 'shooting galleries' in the Seattle Metro area, given that it's ALL pretty narrow with fairways running adjacent to each other and not much protection on alot of them.

I have scattered  a few groups, and a couple of years ago I pulled an 8 iron (which is one of my best shots  Roll Eyes) into a golf cart as the group in front was leaving. They said it bouced once off of something in the basket, and landed on the seat right between them. They were actually pretty nice about it, because at first they thought it fell out of one of their bags.

I got hit in the calf a last spring, hard enough to knock me off my feet. I walked into some trees looking for my ball, completely oblivious to the fact that one of my group was setting up with a long iron 15  yards or so behind me. He bladed/pushed it, and it hight me right in the meaty part. The bruise actually had a dimple pattern in it!!

My own fault, really.
