Masters Golf Pool possibility
« on: April 03, 2007, 12:00:42 PM »

I'll be willing to run a Masters pool for those interested. I found a pool on the web that uses the format I've laid out below but I'm open to suggestions.

Don't have much for prizes - couple of boxes of Strata Ace balls but I could see what else I can find.

Let me know what you think.

Rules

Each team will consist of seven (7) players
Combined Salary must be 32-36
Best two players cannot combine for a salary of over 15. (example, if you pick Tiger you my not pick a #7 or #8. If you pick Phil, you may not pick another #8)

Scoring
Thursday - best 6 scores count
Friday - best 6 scores count
Saturday - best 5 scores count
Sunday - best 5 scores count
Sunday Bonus - your best individual Sunday score will be DOUBLED

Prizes?Huh?Huh???

We could do best each day/4 day total/worst for each day, etc. looking for input.

I like it.  My only concern is that the scoring is pretty complicated and may keep people from joining.  We only have a couple of days before it starts, so simpler might be better.

Plus, it's a lot for you to calculate every round.

I'll throw in a prize to the pool. I'll check what I have when I get home tonight.

In the event that this is the format everyone agrees upon (really makes no difference to me one way or the other, as long as someone else tracks/scores), here is my team:

8 - Scott, Adam ( 5 )
7 - Ogilvy, Geoff ( 8 )
6 - Montgomerie, Colin ( 22 )
6 - Olazabal, Jose Maria ( 28 )
4 - Pettersson, Carl ( 47 )

I like the format, and the scoring isn't as complicated as I originally thought.

I think we just need to decide on what determines the winner(s).   Obviously 4-day total is important.  Sunday is probably up there, too.  The 4-day worst total is kind of amusing because if you know you're out of the main competition, you could have a chance at the worst.

Here's my team:

9 - Woods, Tiger ( 1 )
6 - Olazabal, Jose Maria ( 28 )
5 - Cabrera, Angel ( 40 )
5 - Oberholser, Arron ( 45 )
4 - Jimenez, Miguel Angel ( 65 )
4 - Weir, Mike ( 48 )

Cool. I'll make the executive decision that this is the format and I'll be the "official" scorekeeper.

We need to decide on the prizes.  Dystopia - I'll pm you tonight with what I may have for prizes and we can decide the contests. Obviously 4-day best should be one.

I've got a stupid question about the scoring.  What happens if 3 of your players don't make the cut?

For example, take this hypothetical team:
8 - Furyk, Jim ( 2 )
7 - Singh, Vijay ( 7 )
6 - Garcia, Sergio ( 13 )
6 - Howelll III, Charles ( 15 )
4 - Johnson, Zach ( 56 )
3 - Couples, Fred ( 104 )
2 - Watson, Tom ( 699 )

If Watson, Couples, and Johnson don't make the cut, what happens with the "best 5 scores count".  Would this team be eliminated before the weekend?  Or would you count the 4th score twice?  Or maybe the worst score of the round of the players still left?

It probably won't happen to anyone's teams, but just in case, I was wondering what would happen.

i thought it was like

1-   -3
2-  -2
3-   -4
4-  +2
5-  -1
6-  0
7- +3
(day 1)
the best 5 scores total -10

say however that by  saturday you only have 4 players left.  your total is simply the sum of who's left

Instead of best 6/5 we could go 4/3 but the same scenario could happen.

Or.....................

Any player who withdraws after beginning play, is disqualified, or misses the cut will receive the highest score of the day for each day he does not compete

Therefore, players who miss the cut will still have a "score" on the weekend, but it could be a +10.

Oh, lol, I completely misunderstood the scoring.

I thought it would look like this:
1-   68
2-  72
3-   74
4-  67
5-  0 (missed cut)
6-  0 (missed cut)
7- 0 (missed cut)
(day 3)

This team would win because everyone else had 5 complete scores. I though you picked a sadsack team for that loophole!  Devil Grin
