Do you have a Nemesis Hole?
« on: May 27, 2007, 11:55:41 PM »

By Nemesis Hole, I mean is there a hole that you play regularly that just kicks your ass time and again?  The type of hole that you screwup more often than not, even though you have the benefit of experience?

I'll add mine later in the thread.  I'm curious whether par 3s, par 4s, or par 5s are more common.

Mine is #18 at Firewheel, the Old Course. It's a 90* dog leg left par 4. Drive is 220 yards to the turn. There are tw0 big bunkers at the end of the fairway. Trees and a creek left. The green is 120yds across the creek and located in a chute of trees, and there is one large tree on the right that partially blocks your shot.

I hate this hole. I either end up left and dead, short right so I have no shot at the green because I didn't make the turn or I chunk my second shot short or right of the green.

The first hole at my new club.  I've played it 17 times and managed one par and one bogey.  It's only 336-360 dogleg left.  It's a very narrow green surrounded by traps.  I have tendency to pull my drive into the trees left.  Even when I hit a decent drive, I flub the second shot.  This hole is has gotten in my head.

It gets old starting every round with a triple.

18 @ schitty park here in PGH.

somewhere in the 380-400 yard range, par 4, downhill in the middle 200 yards or so, fairway severe left to right slope... uphill from there to the green. entire left side effectively OB.  right side adjacent to 1st fairway, lined with trees and some surprisingly decent rough lately.

so... doesn't sound *that* bad, right?

80 yards from the tee box (which isn't really a tee box...oh well) there is a very old tree, about 60-80 feet tall and wide enough to span the entire width of the fairway 'window'   (fairway does open up to about 25 yards wide behind it)

so for those of us who hit low drives (me!), you have to try to hit a huge hook around it, with the ball starting in the 1st fairway,  a huge slice around it, with the ball starting O/B left (and if it does come to the fariway, because of the slope it will find the right rough),  or to tee it really high and risk the embarassing popup 100 yarder.    soooo, say you DO* negotiate these odds....  there are 'mounds'  of huge dirt and incredibly thick foliage/rough  sectioning off the fairway about 125 out.... so say you DO hit a great drive  (about 250-275, and straight or drawing back in) ... your ball will be stuck in hideous mound with no play.

you could* lay back with a 3w, hybrid, or something, but the green is about 7 yards deep , with shrubs behind it defining ob, so have fun controlling your 175ish approach

i have made par on the hole a few times, but usually more like double or triple.

Oh, Where Do I Start...

No 1. @ Meadowink. I have written excessive rants about this hole, but I'll describe it one more time.

First tee jitters combined with: Water on your left, bunch of trees separating the No.1 fairway from the No.9 next to it. An uphill fairway that even from the women's tees looks just craptastic. And no practice tee boxes to whack the jitters off.

Rawr.

At the course I've been playing most often, the 7th is usually my downfall. It's not too long, only about 380-390, but you get to hit over water from each of the tees. That means that from the blue tees, you get to hit over four sections of water. You only need to hit the ball about 170 to clear the water, but with four separate sections, it is imposing, for me. Also, there is usually a crosswind that makes it so easy to gravitate to the largest part of the lake.
If I get past that hole, the 15th and/or the 16th will do me in. The 15th is no great shakes, less than 400 yards, with a slight dogleg left, and OB on the right. The green is on a butte, (that's the best I can describe it), and pretty crooked. Even if you get on, two putts aren't guaranteed.
The 16th is a 165 par 3, usually playing to a 'shorter' distance. The green, however, is about 50 ft elevated, making it play 3 clubs longer, on the average. Still not hard, but if you miss the green, you can easily be in jail.

#3 at Wingpointe.  Long par 4.  Water down left side.  Wormhole bunker front left exists just to suck the life out of me.  #1 hole on course and rightfully so.

I thought this thread was about that ***hole Nemesis from FIGs R&E.

#3 at Wingpointe is nasty, but my nemesis is #8. 143 yd Par 3, water in front, and left. A bunker in back and more water behind that. Long native grass everywhere else. It's actually a pretty harmless hole all the way around (#17 on the course) but it kills me nearly every time. I think I've hit the green all of twice in the entirety of all the rounds I've played there.

#5 at North Shore in Tacoma, #1 Hdcp. hole, 425 yard dog leg left, Ob left, H2O right, green elevated maybe 30 feet. The drive just doesn't fit my eye.

#5 at my home course.

331-351 yards depending on the tees. Huge pond in front of green with a creek running from lower left of pond to the left across fairway.

Fairway is split so if you want to hit driver you have to go left (tight fairway) and carry the creek. ANY fade/slice puts you in the pond. Reward is you typically have a little wedge into the green.

Most play to the right and hit 180-200 yard club. Then approach into green. The green has a large ridge in the center so you need to be on the pin side with your approach or you have a bitch putt. Plus the green is really wide but not very deep as you face it.

For whatever reason this hole eats me up. It's a par 4 and usually I'll play it 4, 6, 6, 7 ,4, 4, 6, 6, 5, 7, 4, 6, you get the idea. I don't know what it is but it's one of those holes I can not play consistently. I've really started to focus on playing safe out to the right, hitting too much club over the green, chipping on and two putting for bogey.

blah, blah, blah......

When we played it,

You smoked a tee shot to the edge of the *feces*, hit a wedge in tight, and 2 putted.

I made it look like brain surgery.  Wink
