You know, when I first saw this thread, I'm wondering what I could possibly need to watch. I mean, I think you all know where I stand on drinking anyway - so one more thing to back up my position? Ohh, nascar. lol. Okay, I'll watch it.

That reminds me, a little more than 3 years ago I was at a friend's open house, and my dad and I are talking to a gentleman whose friendship with my parents goes back almost 30 years. Anyway, the discussion comes around to nascar. This gentleman was saying how he isn't really interested in it (my dad doesn't watch nascar, I couldn't watch more than a few circles, so we're all on the same page), but a close friend of his is. So he tunes into the race, and he usually manages to tune in when something big is happening , just so he and his friend can talk about it. I thought that was pretty cool.

Ohhhhhh, ouch! Nascar vehicles really weight 3500 lbs? They look like they'd be even lighter than that.
high speed turns would be impossible. That's true. They still look lighter, but looks can be deceiving. Anwyay, thanks for pointing that out. lol

There are some unanswered questions on page 1. Which ones? I see several. Cars 3400# ? Easy. # 3 finishing 10th after spin? Yes, if he righted the car, and cars behind him weren't on the lead lap.

No, no, not those ones. These ones: 'Kay, so oval tracks are better. Keeps the race tighter, that right? Without doing research before each race, is there any other way for someone like me to find out what type a track it is? Any good tips or general info that could help? And also, why are there some D tracks you would keep if you were elected "King of America"? The prestige? To have a little change every once-in-a-while?

1: SHORT tracks under 1 mile are better for close racing. The best track NASCAR and IRL race is Richmond, which .75 miles and D shaped. (Having the front stretch in an arc has a simple reason: You can build the grandstand so that everybody can see the cars all the way from the exit of turn 4 to the entrance of turn 1.) 2: You can ask me, or you can go to the NASCAR website which will have a diagram of that weeks venue. This week is Phoenix, which might be the 2d best track they race at 1 mile with a dogleg on the back stretch. Sitting on the hill above turn 4 is a party rivaled only by the legendary infield at Talladega, although much more laid back. 3: I'd keep Charlotte, which was the blueprint for all the ones that followed after it was built in 1960. I'd probably keep California, because it's actually 2 miles, although I don't think I've seen a decent race there yet. Of course today at Texas was one for the ages, so WTF do I know...

Oh! Short tracks, not necessarily oval. Okay. Are there more short oval tracks or D tracks?
Is there a typical starting time for a race or does it vary weekly? Is there a typical number of laps for the races or does each race vary?
Who would you say are better drivers/drivers more interesting to follow?
Will firefox ever recognize "Intimidator" or will I always have to add it to the dictionary?

All the tracks but 2 are ovals. http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/pir/index.htmlThere's a drop down menu in the upper right that will pull all the tracks up. This week will at 12:00pm Seattle time.

How long will this race approximately take? It would begin 10am here, and I'm not home 'til about noon. What would be the latest I should be home to at least catch the ending? (Oooh, and I might have plans for lunch next week, too. Totally forgot about that.) Then there's the TV factor: Charlotte, Atlanta, Vegas, Chicago, etc. all look pretty much the same on TV, but when you see Bristol, Richmond, Darlington or Martinsville you know instantly what you're looking at. What defines Bristol, etc., on tv more so than Charlotte, etc?

http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/What defines Bristol, etc., on tv more so than Charlotte, etc? http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/bms/For me the fact that it's only .533 mile track and they get 160,000 people there, the shots from the blimp or the plane or whatever are uber cool. Also this is where "rubbin' is racin'" plays. You don't get a lot of banging on the big tracks, Bristol and Richmond, yup. How long will this race approximately take? Generally the American sporting fans attention span is two to four hours, this ain't cricket. NASCAR racing is no different, generally around the three to four hour mark, but these things called yellow flags slow the race down. The modern NASCAR has become a marvel of sophisticated aerodynamics, where a wrong 1/2 a pound of air pressure (too much or too little) in one tire can ruin a day. The short tracks remind me of how it used to be in the "old" days, where these southern dudes were flying and playin' bumper cars just to deliver the next batch. Is there a typical number of laps for the races or does each race vary? Varies, not every track is the same length, but 400-500 miles is the general, there is a 600 mile race in the summer I think it's at Charlotte? that is a brutal test to both man and machine. Now you can't have a 500 mile race on the shorter tracks, like Bristols .533 mile track, (well you could) but you'd be there all day (again the attention span), so that's usually called "The Sharpie 500 (or insert sponsor here" that means 500 laps. Who would you say are better drivers/drivers more interesting to follow? Again varies, I like Jimmie Johnson 'cuz he's cute as a bug and I get lost in his dreamy brown eyes. You'll find that NASCAR fans are THE most brand loyal people in this country, if a person likes Darrel Waltrip and Darrel Waltrip drives the "Tide" car, well dadgum it they are going to use Tide until the day they die. You can insert Dale Junior/Budweiser or Tony Stewart/Home Depot or Ricky Rudd/Snickers and the loyalty remains the same.
