Superstitions When Watching Sports?
« on: November 26, 2007, 11:33:26 AM »

Tonight's MNF (that's Monday Night Football for the Aussie-impaired) and an email got me wondering.  When the Steelers play ...

  • My kid wears a Steelers jersey that day.
  • Come game time, I'm wearing mine (#86).
  • The Hard Hat Brigade hat is on the TV console.
  • The Terrible Towel is folded once lengthwise and placed over the shoulder corresponding to the side of the screen they're driving toward (or trying to push the opposing offense into).  Fold edge toward my neck.
  • "Rally cap" = Towel placed over head, Emperor-style.
  • Steelers bottle cozy over beer; Steelers "jersey" front aligns with beer label.
  • Nothing I wear can be a color of the opposing team's uniform.

When my wife mocked me (once), I told her that if I thought it would have a positive influence on the game, I'd paint my face black and gold.  Shocked

I realize I'm weird.  That aside, does anyone else have any superstitions come game day?

Impressive.   Thumbs Up  I'm not quite in your league.

Me:  Vikings jersey.  Corresponding home/away.  #26 Smith.  Vikings can/bottle coozie.   Hat: rare, but at times, baseball style.  Black, Viking logo.

Karen:  Vikings sweatshirt, jersey sometimes in early, or pre-season.

Madolyn:  Could care less and is outside playing.  Probably in traffic.

Asked previously but no answer yet --> cozy contents = I.C. Lite?

Terrible Towel nearby.  That's it although I've been known to keen at banshees after a loss.

Steelers are on SNF next week v. Cincy.  You haulin' all that *feces* along?   Shocked

Iron City is pretty hard to find 'round these parts.  I go with some kinda stout, usually.

The hardhat won't make the journey.  The Towel and jersey probably will, although the jersey may be replaced with a more tasteful Steelers shirt:

I'm really not a superstitious guy, so I can't really think of anything I must do when rooting (that's cheering for the Aussie-impaired) for my team. I used to know a guy who insisted that the Jazz won every time he drank Miller High Life, but that's just too high a price to pay.

No superstitions at all really.

One thing though - I used my DVR a lot and watch all sorts of stuff delayed, and love it.  However, if I'm watching a live sports event - for some reason it drives my bonkers if someone hits the pause button.  I'm slightly neurotic about the 'live' aspect of it, and do not know why  Don't Know

Nothing clothes/drinking related but I do remember never moving from a particular chair/sofa while watching games. Thinking if I moved while they were doing well they'd end up getting beat. It was a bit OCD as I remember.

Then the '98 Vikings came along and kicked me hard in the nuts. Since then I've put "my" sports teams in perspective. I have fun when I watch them but I'm not caught up enough to have any superstitions.

Not really.  I generally have some type of red shirt/OU shirt on during the game.  But I think we've lost while I was wearing each of them at one time or another.  I also bust out the OU tittie (Coozy for the Aussie-impaired) and Miller Light.  And I always turn on the surround sound for the game.

Okay, just a little question, from the impaired-aussie. Grin Grin Grin

I was flicking around the tv, and they had american football on, and the Vikings were on, well I knew that Stroh and Torp liked them so I decided to watch a little bit of it.

WHY, do they stop every two minutes. Huh?
Someone gets tackled and they stop and everybody goes to the sidelines. Huh?

The good thing about getting old, is that you can hit the ball out of sight.

Kevin Williams gets tired.  They also need time to show enough beer commercials to pay for showing it in Australia.

Actually, it's just how the game is played.  A lot slower than what folks are used to overseas.
Between each play, and several sets of plays there are "time outs" to make strategy, and a lot of the "rulings" for penalties take time.

Especially when Hochuli flexes them.

Don't forget the TV timeouts.  (lame)

If you come at it from the perspective of soccer, it's a boring game with lots of interruptions.  Other than the interruptions, then, ...  Devil
