Anything For '08?
« on: March 20, 2008, 07:06:41 AM »

I have a few things I'll be working on.  Kind of a carry over from the end of last year.

First, as always is a more on plane take away, and set at the top.  My balance has always been pretty good, but I do have a tendency to pull the club a little on the inside, which actually sets me a little flat.

Tempo again, of course.

Two new things, are more of a conscious attempt at driving through the ball at impact, and less of "hitting it" or the focus on moment of impact.  Swing through, drive to a finish, like theres no ball there.

The other is at, or through impact, a good flat left hand, perpendicular to the target line, not facing up/open, and rotating the right hand to a "handshake" position waist high in the follow through.

Lastly, getting to a good follow through "finish".  I subscribe to Ringer's teachings, that where you end up is not only an indication of things done correctly, but points to where things may have broken down.

All of those things.  Seriously, we must have read the same article.   Devil

For me, everything slots into form if I avoid the overswing.  That's basically my only swing thought right now.  From that point it's slight adjustments only to refine the things on your list.  I really focused on that the other day and ended up playing all my irons and all but two (first two drivers) of my woods basically without mistake (*).  Barring rusty chipping and putting I would have scored near enough my PB.  Those two things will come.  No worries there.

* Wouldn't trust the draw and so missed left a lot but they were good strokes with solid contact.  No tops, chunks, duffs, s%#*@s, so forth.  At this point in my golfing career that constitutes good shooting.

Indeed.  That's prob. my best answer in your thread, but I'm not sure how to quantify it in a percentage number.

My goal would be to shoot a round of golf without a miss-hit*.

*Distance, direction, shot shape, etc. may be off, but still a shot struck without any of the things you mentioned.

I've yet to accomplish that.

Synchronizing my upper body and lower body.  I tend to get out of synch for reasons I can't yet determine.  Upper body ahead (more common) = pulls and/or hooks, lower body ahead = pushes.

I'd like to work on hitting a fade. I usually draw/hook the ball. It takes the right side out of play most of the time but that hook is as bad as a slice. Getting a fade working might also help with my fat shots as I come way too far on the inside.

Putting, chipping, and pitching would be nice. I could probably drop 8 or more strokes per round if I could learn to freakin' putt. But, like I said in the other thread, I don't think I'll be able to play enough this year to expect anything dramatic.

You can have mine. I need to do just the opposite and work a draw or two into my game with more consistency.

I asked the Head Pro the other day: "How can I shave 5 strokes off my score?"
He said: "Skip the first par 3 you come to."

No, no.  I kid.  Seriously, I asked him the other day:  "I need some help with my game.  What do you think I should do?"
He said:  "Take two weeks off.  And quit."

Thank you.  Thank you.  I'm here all week.  Remember to tip you wait staff.

First range visit of 2008 went down earlier today.  Took SW, GW and 7-iron.  Not great, not bad.  Worked on the aforementioned body harmony.  A few shockingly good results (effortless feel, crisp contact, laser-like flight right on the target line).  Amid many scabby ones.

I think the main thing I'd change is eliminating the brief, but still too long, pause at the top of my swing.  The problem is that my hands don't feel "right" at the top.  I'm thinking that it should be easy enough to change.  Who knows?  Maybe the winter break corrected it.  Really, that's the main reason I don't mind a few months off of golf.  Seems to undo some of the bad habits I pick up over the season.

Maybe spend a bit less time reading outside to practice in the backyard, too.

Continue working on the Stack and Tilt swing and figure out how to hit a driver without snap hooking it using S&T.  Also, work on my mental game, routine, set-up and course management to stop the couple blunders a round that really cost me.  The S&T really helps my short iron game and in making solid contact more consistently.  So if I can iron out the long game I should be in good shape.

I too like Ringer's tip on the finish being so important.  It really helps me stay in balance and in sync.
