Enthusiasm For Golf [DOWNER]
« on: May 16, 2008, 09:13:20 AM »

LowPro has an annual two-day tournament as a fundraiser for the local SPCA.  Lots of FGIers show up for it -- call it the East Coast Desert Storm.  I played in the pre-event round at Verdict Ridge yesterday, riding with superT as rangerx and coachsb rounded out the foursome.  First round since the two at Bandon the first week of December 2007.  So yeah, my game was polished.

The other guys were nice, it was good to catch up with them and to get to know superT(errance) better ... but the desire to play golf still just isn't there.  Sad  Once again, I was actively checking what number hole we were on by about #13 to see how many more holes I had to play before it'd be over.  I actually emailed my wife during the drive from 14 green to 15 tee: "Still no real interest in playing golf."

Back in law school and beyond, I routinely went out as a single.  As I am NOT a people-person, it was pretty much about the golf.  Loved to play, loved to go to the range and just see what I could do with a club.  These days, though, it's all about the people -- I can't see myself EVER going out just to play golf.  I'd thought it was just burnout (from what, I don't know), but it's been a good three years now and nothing's changed.

Where did it all go?

I haven't swung a golf club since August, and I increasingly find myself not really caring.  Sad

You are both *fudge*ed in the head.

I'm addicted to golf more than pot.   Shocked

Things change.  You develop other interests.  You have kids.  You evolve.

I use to autocross back before we had kids.  My wife did, too.  We had a Formula Vee we'd haul around the Midwest to compete in different events.  All the while I did this, I really wanted to go road racing (SCCA), but really couldn't afford it.  I finally got my wife's okay to do this, but my job situation changed so I put it on hold.  Then we had kids.  I lost my interest in road racing, sold the autocross car and took up golf.  I have no desire to race anymore, I rarely even watch racing on TV.

As long as you don't replace golf with being a couch potato, it's good.

BTW, if you're bored by the thirteenth hole, try playing nine.  I do that a lot more than I used to.

It's been 15 months since my last round. Undecided

I used to go to the range 3-4 times a week and wake up before dawn to be the first one out on the course and get in a fast round solo.  I bet I spent even more time in the garage building clubs or practicing with training aids.

Just doesn't seem fun anymore. Sad

A: I know exactly what you're going through.  As I have gone through it my self, and am only recently coming out of it.  Even living on a golf course did not spur my enthusiasm.  I have played less living here than ever in my life.

Some of it was time and money.  Some of it was lack of improvement in my game.  Some it was just hell, like you, who knows.  Just no interest in going out there.

One of the things that sets me apart from you guys is I abhor playing alone, basically refuse to do it.

I'm now starting to get the desire back.  In fact, I took today off to go out and play.  I'm playing better, and enjoying the game.

B:  Pick better people to play with.  Jeebus *fudge*!  I guarantee you'd be focused on golf instead of just having to endure sitting and listening to me for 4 hours.  I'd get you back on track.  Count on it.

The good thing about getting old, is that you can hit the ball out of sight.
