Question for the great sports minds of Golfhos
« on: September 29, 2008, 07:39:39 PM »

Sport:  Baseball
Games:  162

Two teams end the division with the same record. For *feces*s and grins let's say they are the Twins and the White Sox.

Let's say I accept the fact that they only play 1 game to decide the winner. Here's the question:

Where should it be played?

1. Winner of the season series between the teams. Again, for *feces*s and grins, let's say the Twins are 10-8 against the Sox this year.  Cool

2. Flip a coin to determine home field.

3. Neutral field.  (I know, I know, this would never happen because god forbid some owner/Selig would be out money if only 549 people showed up in Cincinnati for a Twins-White Sox game.)

Your thoughts? Oh, anyone who tells me to HTFU on this exam will be perilously close to me smiting them across the head and shoulders.  Smiley

Last year, the Rox got to play at home against the Padres because they won the season series.

No they didn't.

Rookie starter Ubaldo Jimenez pitched a lights-out game for Colorado, who held off Arizona in the season's final game to pull into a tie with San Diego for the NL wild card. The two teams will play an elimination game tomorrow in Denver, with the winner facing the Phillies in the first round of the playoffs.

Now, because the Rockies won an earlier coin flip, they'll have to win in Coors Field to advance.

I should clarify.

If there is a one game playoff needed for a division title they have used a coin flip for as long as I can remember.

And I think it's B.S.

I thought it was always a coin toss, which I hate.  Huh?

Whoever wins the season series should have home field advantage.

Then again I come from a time when the all star game DIDN'T determine home field advantage for the World Series...what the hell do I know.

I thought the coin flips were done ahead of time to decide the matchups if there were ties of three or more teams. Whatever the case, the Rox did win the season series against the Padres so they got the home game as they rightfully deserved thus avoiding the need to HTFU.

Any coin flip in professional sports is bull*feces*.

Playoffs should be record, division opponent record, conference record, Non conference record, etc.  However the NFL does it.

Coin flips are used in your scenario as well. But....the Rockies did not get home field due to their record. It was a coin flip as referenced in the link I found. As well as baseball rules from what the Google told me last night.

And it sucks. It should be head-to-head record.

Or I'll accept Aske's answer of steel cage match.

Nice Blader!

I should have known I could count on a guy with your corporate background as well as baseball experience to solve this problem.

And the Google provides us with all the reasons why this should be immediately forwarded to Mr. Selig. Perhaps if you are on chatauqua near the Commish anytime soon?

Chelsea Cooley, (born October 30, 1983), is a beauty queen from Mint Hill, North Carolina who has competed in the Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants and who has held the Miss USA 2005 title.

Cooley was crowned Miss USA during the Miss USA 2005 pageant in Baltimore, Maryland on April 11, 2005. She was the first Miss North Carolina USA to win the Miss USA crown.

Cooley is rumoured to have taken her love of baseball to a new level, as she has been seen several times with Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer.

Her love of shag dancing led her to compete in the Grand National Shag Dancing Competition where she was declared Grand National Shag Dance Champion.

Shag Dancing??  Checkmate White Sox. Home field advantage to the Twins!!

Sadly, Joe proves that he has taken one too many foul tips to the head:

Joe, however, ended the relationship in November of the same year.

Yeah, I realized after reading the article that coin flips were also used to determine the winner of the two-way tie between the Rox and Pads last season. I'm just saying that because it just happened to have turned out that the Rox won the season series that that was the way I (mistakenly) remembered the home team being determined. Had the coin flip gone the other way, I most certainly would have remembered the actual implications of the coin flip and I most likely would have been the one to have started this same thread a year ago. Grin

I also think that using a coin flip is BS. They should at least use a method that is somewhat sporting-like RPS.
