The most popular sport?  ORLY?  Thomas Paine surrenders.   Wink

On topic: 'Cuz it *goshdarn* rules.  That always trumps ideology.

Well...off the top of my head....it's not like other businesses.

Technically, I don't need my competitors. The Vikings need the Bears, Packers, etc. because they have to play someone. They need to keep teams viable.

Plus if it really is the epitome of socialism would Matthew Stafford make more than almost every QB without playing a down? Even though the draft is involved contract negotiations (especially when one is a free agent) are more akin to free market.

Again I think fascism is closer to reality for the NFL.

I try to schedule my doctor's visits in Canada so as to take in a CFL game while I'm there.

of course ... by most popular, I meant in the land of the might 'capitalist' $

to my point (which was raised while a bit intoxicated, and not communicated as clear as intended)

I mean more like the following aspects of its operation
(which are being called out as "evil socialist" daily lately in other aspects of life... granted in a different frame of operation)

minimum wage
revenue sharing
welfare (draft)
enforced attempts at parity of participants
salary caps
etc

I guess my point was people don't seem to hate the concepts, so long as they don't get hit in the pocket book directly (except of course they do, since the NFL is produced and operated through taxpayer owned airwaves, and taxpayer owned stadiums, and since the NFL is allowed to violated antritrust exemptions in broadcasting agreements, etc.. but that's too much for joe6pack to contemplate for certain) .  For most people, the NFL makes *their* teams more competitive and more enjoyable.... instead of letting the 'market forces' decide.  (Of course, this makes the NFL more $, but that isn't the point being discussed)

*Last edit* OF course, I don't think the above points are socialism.  That doesn't change the fact that the majority of 'Merkans are being told that they are.

The signing bonus renders all that other *feces* (except revenue sharing) relatively moot.  Try to eliminate that and see what the players/teams/owners revolt would look like.  Capitalism lives  Wink

* and I hate what TV is doing to football.  Stop for this, stop for that, give 'tv timeouts' (WTF, honestly??), etc.  Then again, I swim against the American sporting stream sometimes.

I've gone to find myself.  If I get back before I return, keep me here.
