Would you work my schedule?
« on: September 08, 2007, 06:04:45 PM »

I've had a couple friends ask me how I can work my schedule. When I break it down for them they start to ponder.

So here is my schedule. Sun - Tues, and every other Wed. I work from 7am-7:30pm. So in 14 days I work 7 of them. Only bad news is I do not get holidays off.

I would work that schedule.  Monday through Friday I work 7:00am to 4:30pm, so those days are shot already.  I'd stretch the hours to 7:00am to 7:30pm in exchange for more days off.

That's almost like the schedule of a fireman.

That doesn't sound so bad.

Mine is 3am til finish (for me around noon) M T Th F Sat.

When I'm playing, I can get in a round most afternoons.  Saturday is a partial split.  4:30am til around 10am, then 2 til 4pm.

Let's all hope that I still even have a job after Oct 5.

I don't play golf anymore.   Well, maybe I do sort of.  I quit keeping score, started drinkning beer and I started playing better.

Could I? Sure. Would I? Depends on the job.

I've done a 9-5 M-F schedule for so long, though, it would take some adjusting.

I am working a 4 on 4 off 12 hour schedule right now...training new hires.  I work 3 night sets in a row followed by 1 day shift, and irregardless of my scheduled days, I have mandatory meetings on Monday and Wednesday.

I was supposed to be in Kazakhstan last month, (working a 28/28 schedule) but a situation no one expected has *fudge*ed me up.  Right now, I am so twisted up, that I get roughly 4 hours of sleep a day.

Absolutely.  I work roughly those hours M-F with a good few half-days on weekends thrown in to boot.

Of course, I do take a couple of hours off for nine holes once a week, bail out for soccer matches, engage in marathon posting sessions, etc.  Still, easily a 55 hour work week when all is said and done.

That sounds worse then 8 hours a day. 3 night and 1 day is screwed up. I've worked nights and it takes one day to adjust. So that sounds like you have maybe 1 day off?

IT sucks. They expect you to work all the time and then some. All upgrades and changes have to be at night and weekends. I feel your pain.

Really it is not bad, I just don't  get the opportunity to get switched around to days off, and sometimes spend my days off sleeping all day, and tweaking all night.   I still get 3.5 days off, and though they are mostly during the week when I have meetings.  Sometimes it works good, as I can get to the course, or get on the bike, and have everything pretty much too self.

Work those hours, yes, especially if it was something I enjoyed.  Those days, no.  I'd try hard to get Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.  The 2 Wednesdays a month, I could live with.  Not Sundays, though.

Right now (well, for the last 3 years actually), my dad's at work before 7, and getting home anywhere between 3:30 and 7:30 (usually close 6, though there are a few days he surprises us with a 3 something).  And the days before he takes a vacation day or two or days that coworkers have off, it can be as late as 9:30 or 10 pm.  (One time he wasn't home until after 10:30; that was a long day).

Yes.

I've been asking for that schedule for about 4 years.  Apparently not gonna happen.

Back when I was young ... worked 4AM-noon at a doughnut shop Tue-Sat, and also 4PM-midnight Wed-Sun at a Bob Evans restaurant.  Draining hours, but great training for my present career.

But at least I don't work in IT.
