Covers...
« on: October 31, 2007, 09:52:30 PM »

I came up with this while I was rockin' the Siouxsie and The Banshees 'Helter Skelter' in the Obscure thread and I don't think we've done this one:

Cover songs, good, great and otherwise.

I was going to post up Pancho and Lefty, because how great is a song when one of the most prolific writers in popular music history records it as a number one and then keeps it in his set for 25 years or so, but then I came across a song I didn't even realize was a cover:

(Sidebar: That's obviously recorded off of vinyl. Tom Petty says he thinks digital media lacks the warmth that vinyl had, so he records analog to vinyl and then to digital. After hearing that, I'm inclined to agree.)

of course analog audio is better in principle.

One presumes so, but reproduction after the master is done is the issue, isn't it?

you need an infinitely high sampling rate to capture something truthfully (in a conversion from digital to analog)

I'm trying to visualize that with nothing more than a 25 year old knowledge of how analog to digital PCM signals work, and not getting very far.

I'm guessing you can't 'capture' the infinite curve of the soundwave with digital recording directly.

I think Petty was referring to the actual sound of a vinyl record. If you listen to that track, it has a certain depth to it.

and yes, vinyl often sounds 'warmer' because it is both continuous and features a much larger dynamic range.

At some point, the limitations of the human ear and the medium used for playback come into play.

I have no idea what those threshholds are. I do know that to my untrained ear raised on rocknroll radio, LP's and yes, actual 45's, CD's have a certain 'brittle' quality, although it's much better now than 15 or 20 years ago.

We'll put The Hoff in the 'Otherwise' category, although I'm not sure that was any 'worse' than the original...

What was up with the sandperson guy?

Aske and I aren't arguing about anything, I don't think.

Even The Hoff can't top this bizarro piece:
