My first set was 1-PW, 1971 Wilson Buttonback blades with 1-3-5 woods to match. I had no idea, at the time, that these things were total classics. I bought them off a friend who I later learned had a coke problem. That might explain how I got the whole set for $40, including the bag, and why the set had his father's name on them. At the time it all seemed on the up and up though.

Anyway, after the golf bug bit me I went out and bought what was basically a step above a starter set of irons. The irons were Wilsons (this was just before Wilson went totally over the edge and into uncool status, sadly) and I bought a set of Ram woods (persimmons, of course). I dumped the '71 Wilsons because they were "old", therefore no good. I think my parents wound up throwing them out when I moved out. Years later I realized what I had had, and I set out to find a set of the buttonbacks. I wound up finding a set at a yardsale a block away, 2-PW for $25. One of these days I'm going to have them refinished.

My senior year of college I bought a Northwestern starter set (3-5-7-9-PW, driver, 3 wood, putter).  A year later the 7 iron head flew off on the driving range.  So, another year later I got a Wilson set of clubs at Wallyworld.  This was in the early 90s.  I didn't start playing golf seriously until about 7 years ago (funny how ACL replacement surgery from playing soccer will do that to a guy  Wink) and which time I had a co-worker make me a set of Penicks.

Wilson Staff musclebacks for ~$100, barely used.

They weren't, strictly, my first set of clubs...I got my first set by trading either a baseball glove or some beer during some vicious binge I was on at the time...and all I remember about them were they were really crappy.

Wilson K-28s. When you hit them off center they stung like hell. When you hit the sweet spot, they still stung like hell. At least they were damn near impossible to get airborne. Sweet sticks.

Ditto.

Wilson Patty Berg start set: powder-blue driver and 5-wood, 3-, 5-, 7- and 9-irons, blade putter.  All in a powder-blue and even-lighter-blue vinyl bag.

Oh, I was stylin'.

No *goshdarn* idea.  They sank when I threw them in the lake so I'm pretty sure they weren't made of feathers.
